Your Naturalization Interview: How to Prepare

Your Naturalization Interview: How to Prepare

When you think about the weight that a naturalization interview carries, the thought of doing well can be intimidating, especially if you feel unprepared. This interview is essentially the last step you have to take in your quest for citizenship and with some preparation, you can increase your chances of success.

Whether you were unable to study all of the information or are unsure about the questions you'll be asked, the most important thing to do is remain calm. The following tips can ensure that you walk into your immigration interview with confidence, no matter the outcome.

Preparing for Your Interview

Above all, make sure you know the basics. Be sure that you can answer all of the questions on your N-400 application just as you filled them out. The officer will orally review this application as a way of testing your English and your authenticity.

All throughout your interview, your ability to speak English is being observed by the officer. They will pay special attention to whether or not you can follow instructions and answer questions. When in doubt, always ask to have something repeated. Being honest with the officer about your misunderstanding is better than taking a wild guess. Officers are required to "repeat and rephrase questions" until they are convinced of your ability to speak or not to speak English.

It is also important to study the list of vocabulary you have been given, as well as the US civics questions. You are only required to answer six correctly, so don't panic if you don't know the whole list. There is a good chance you'll still be able to pass.

What Should You Do If You Fail the Exam?

Even if you fail the exam portion of your interview, you will have a chance to reschedule and take it again. Regardless of how much you've prepared, sometimes being confident is the best way to show the officers you are ready for US citizenship.
