Tips to Remember Before Showing Up for Your Court Date
- Show Up On Time
- Figure Out Your Transportation
- Dress Appropriately
- Pay Attention in Court
Show Up On Time - As a general rule in NY courts, you are to be in the courtroom by 9:30am. The judge will typically call your case according to the order in which your lawyer signed it in, meaning your case will not be called until your attorney arrives in court. This does not mean, however, that you can show up whenever your representative does.
Figure Out Your Transportation - It is highly recommended that you take public transportation via the bus or subway. Take the “F” and “E” trains from Union Turnpike. The Courthouse is one block East of Queens Blvd. If you will be driving yourself, you need to allow extra time to find parking. There are only private lots with limited space available on the west side of Queens Boulevard. There is also street parking as well, however, it can be more time-consuming to try to find those spots and you might end up late to Queens County Court.
Dress Appropriately - You do not have to wear something fancy, but you do need to look professional and well-groomed. Wear an outfit that is clean, fits properly, and demands respect. It may be good idea to determine your outfit the night before and give yourself plenty of time to get ready the morning of your court date.
Pay Attention in Court - When you are waiting in court for your case to be called, you do not want to create any sort of conflict with the Court Officers. This means you need to be alert, avoid talking with others, and polite at all times. Make sure to turn your cell phone off, do not bring any food or drinks into the courtroom, and stay seated.
