President Obama's recent address to the United States inspires hope for immigrants unlike any other action ever has. What do President Obama's changes mean for immigrants?
In his address, President Obama encouraged immigrants to 'come out of the shadows' and get right with the law. The new laws that will be enacted allow immigrants to do so without fear, should they meet the necessary qualifications. Nearly five million immigrants are being given the chance to stay in America temporarily without fear of deportation.
Some of the changes we can expect to see include:
- Continue to strengthen border protection and prevent illegal immigration
- Realign deportation priorities by deporting felons instead of families
- Require undocumented immigrants to 'play by the rules'
- Grow the opportunities for skilled immigrant workers
In order for an immigrant to be given the chance to stay in America, they are required to register, complete a background check, and agree to pay their taxes. This option is only available for those who have been in America for more than five years or who have children who are American citizens or residents.
It is important to note that the new immigration changes do not apply to anyone who has recently come to America or who may cross the border illegally in the future. President Obama is doing everything he can to bring this country back to its roots and he believes it starts with immigration. According to the President, our country needs a common purpose. It's time to take responsibility and make amends for our past.
In his own words – do we value families and work to keep them together? At its core, that is what these immigration changes are about.
